AYC Men in Black
The Men In Black form the baritone line for the Recital Choir, one of the senior ensembles of the Australian Youth Choir. The Men in Black offers young men with changing or changed voices the opportunity to sing in a mixed voice ensemble with the young women of the Australian Youth Choir.
The young men rehearse on Friday evenings during the school term and perform at three major concerts each year. Friday evening rehearsals offer members a unique social occasion revolving around music. The shared enjoyment of the vocal repertoire ensures a lively hour and a half rehearsal between 6:00pm and 7:30pm.
Admittance to the group is by audition. The course undertaken by the Australian Youth Choir Men in Black aims to continue the vocal development for boys and young men commenced as treble voices in the Australian Youth Choir, but we also extend an invitation to other young men whose voices have changed or are changing and who are interested in developing their vocal skills.
The Australian Youth Choir aims to develop vocal technique, sight singing skills, breathing technique and concert performance skills for the Men in Black.
There is no need to stop singing in a vocal ensemble because your voice has changed or is changing. The Men in Black play an important role as part of the Recital Choir.
On May 29, the ABC visited Friday evening rehearsals for the Australian Youth Choir in Canterbury Victoria to meet them and chat to Bill Simmons.
