A Changing voice

Bill Simmons - Artistic Director of The Australian Youth Choir writes for "Sing out" about the needs of the changing voice.

Physically, emotionally and mentally, puberty is a time of significant change. Along with the adjustments that every boy and girl will experience, young choristers must also contend with the unique challenges of the changing voice. For youth choir conductors and vocal teachers, making considered provisions for changing voices is essential.

Both boys and girls experience similar growth of the larynx. That is, until puberty, when boys' vocal folds grow at a rate almost twice of that of girls, almost doubling in lenght and mass.
